The legend of Joseph Jagger

Joseph Jagger is a legendary figure in the history of roulette. He is the first man who gained fame as a roulette player. He is also known in the gambling circle as the man “broke the bank at Monte Carlo”. He was a native of England and was an engineer by profession. Roulette was one of Jagger’s greatest interests and he intently believed that if the wheel of roulette is slightly manipulated a desired outcome can be achieved through it. This imperfection was in the form that certain numbers appeared more in the game than the others. Hence the equal probability of outcome can be disturbed.

Jagger travelled to Monte Carlo: the hub of roulette in order to prove his ideas. He employed 6 people to stand in a casino and observe six different roulette wheels. The observations of the men helped Jagger in concluding that there was a single wheel in the casino that was biased and a set of numbers were more likely to come out in the outcome.

After acquiring this knowledge, Jagger went to the casino and betted on exactly those numbers which appear on the biased roulette wheel more often than others. He used the wheels patterns that had been observed earlier against the casino. In a period of three days Jagger managed to win around $120,000 which was a really huge sum in those days (and still is!).

When the casino owners realized that they were losing a great sum to a particular person they grew suspicious and tried many ways to prevent Jagger from winning. The roulette wheel were interchanged on the fourth day, so that, it caused some initial loss to Jagger. Although soon Jagger realized that a trick is being played on him and searched for the biased wheel which he found in a while.

Yet again intrigued by his continuous wins the casino shifted the tables of the particular wheel and Jagger was again set searching for the wheel. He got tired of the hide and seeks game the casino was playing and decided to leave the place with the money he had earned till date. After reaching his Hometown, Jagger quit his job and invested the money he earned in real estate.

Joseph Jagger is remembered till date for the amazing triumph that he won over the casino and the impeachable wheel of roulette.
