Renowned gamblers through the ages

The credit for the popularity of gambling goes to people who since ages are making money out of it and are undisputable gamblers. The gambling industry has its origin in 18th century and from then names are getting attached to it. Some of the legends are known as Nick the Greek, Sky Masterson, the Cincinnati Kid, and Stanford Wong.

Now Internet has brought casinos at our home on our computer screen where people can sit in their rooms and can play roulette with people from all over the world and they do not need to go to Las Vegas, Atlantic City or the Riviera. But if we look at the old age where people just needed a deck of cards or a pair of dice we think of those fanatics whose gambling activities we still remember.

One of the first famous gamblers in the world was John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich, who was addicted to gambling and led a scandalous life. Once he was so much drowned in the game that when his servant offered him beef he told him to put it in between two pieces of bread so that he could eat it in his hands. This is where the sandwich got its name.

One of the West’s most famous gamblers was “Doc” Holliday and he was famous for his hard drinking, tough fighting and brutal killing. He is chiefly remembered for fighting alongside Wyatt Earp at the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

American legend “Wild Bill” Hickok was also famous for his violent behaviour and had many enemies. He was assassinated on the poker table and pair of aces and a pair of eights was in his hands and ever since this combination is called ‘Dead Man’s’ hand. He’s chiefly remembered for taming two of the most lawless towns in Kansas.

Benny Binion gave up his life of violence and moved to Las Vegas at 43 and opened his own casino.1970s he bought and marketed the World Series of Poker tournament, which has grown over time to be the biggest in the world.

The World Series of Poker tournament has created many famous gamblers of today. One of them is Johnny Chan, “The Great Wall of China” who won the World Championships in 1987 and 1988 consecutively.

Most of the people who got fame in gambling did not win the game but lost the huge fortune, which has made them famous.
